BLOC Takes Los Angeles: Film and Panel on Board Leadership
By Megan Nacar
BLOC Screens OnBoard at Soho Warehouse, Sparks Powerful Dialogue on Board Service
Yesterday, BLOC brought together members of our Los Angeles community for an afternoon of inspiration, storytelling, and connection—set against the backdrop of the stylish Soho Warehouse. The event was generously sponsored by three-time Emmy-nominated executive producer Karus Nelson.
We kicked off with a networking hour, followed by a screening of OnBoard, a powerful documentary produced by Black Women on Boards. The film sheds light on the journey, challenges, and impact of Black women navigating paths to board service—raising critical questions about access, readiness, and representation in leadership.
After the film, I had the privilege of moderating a dynamic panel with Denise Bronner (Empactful Ventures), Hilary Yu (Our Academy), and Mikel Davis (NBC Universal). Together, we explored nonprofit board service through an intersectional lens—sharing insights, personal stories, and practical advice.
Key takeaways from the conversation included:
Be prepared—do your research and understand the responsibilities of board service.
Build visibility through thought leadership and a clear personal brand.
Your network matters—not just who you know, but who knows you, and for what.
Socialize your vision for board service with mentors, sponsors, and peers.
Stay authentic and ensure alignment with the mission and values of the boards you pursue.
This event marked one of our first formal member gatherings in Los Angeles—and it was incredibly energizing to see so many familiar faces and new ones in the room. We’re thrilled to see the BLOC community growing in LA and are committed to creating more spaces like this where conversations turn into action and inspiration leads to impact.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. This is just the beginning.
